Distinguished and Famous people from Apollo Bay
Apollo Bay's creative connections include musicians who grew up together in the town and an actor whose childhood was spent there. Their later work has taken coastal beginnings onto festival stages and screens.
🎵 The Vasco Era: Sid O'Neil, Ted O'Neil and Michael Fitzgerald
Brothers Sid and Ted O'Neil and drummer Michael Fitzgerald grew up in Apollo Bay and formed the Vasco Era as teenagers. School bands, rehearsals and a shared interest in music provided the beginnings; later came festival appearances and recording in San Francisco. Sid took vocals and guitar, with Ted on bass. Their own account of the band's development returns to the town and the friendships behind the performances, before the venues and recording opportunities grew considerably larger.
🎭 Neil Melville
Neil Melville was born in Sydney but grew up in Apollo Bay before studying drama at Flinders University in Adelaide. His acting career has included film, television and theatre, with credits such as Brilliant Lies, Jack Irish, Rake and The Hollowmen. Production notes for the short film Pedal also recorded a later home in Apollo Bay. His local connection therefore extends from childhood to adult life alongside a long career as a character actor.
